Testimonials

“I want to let you know that the William Blew "History of Steeple-chasing" arrived safely in today's post. It is truly everything that I expected and more. The book arrived in good sound condition and all the color plates, which you said, were also in fine condition. I can't thank you enough for the highly professional service you gave to me. I hope that we may work together again in the future. Again, my thanks and very best wishes.”

“ The book arrived promptly and was beautifully wrapped in tissue paper. The outer cardboard packaging was stout and prevented any damage in transit. I am very pleased with my purchase which is to be a present for my Aunt. She will be absolutely delighted with the book and I have no hesitation in recommending this seller. A very positive experience.”

About this title:

William Baxter ALS, FHS (1787 - 1871), was a British botanist and appointed curator of the Oxford Botanic Garden in 1813.

British Phaenogamous Botany are figures and descriptions of British flowering plants. The 6 volumes were published in Oxford by J.H. Parker between 1832 and 1843. The 509 hand-coloured copper engraved plates are accompanied by botanical descriptions. To illustrate this work on the British flora, Baxter employed two local artists - Isaac Russell (an Oxford glass painter) and C. Matthews. The plates were hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law.

Provenance: From the deceased estate of The Hermitage, Hexham, Northumberland, sold at auction in June 2013 by Anderson and Garland Auctioneers. The Hermitage is a stately home which was occupied by the same family for more than 200 years, during which time the family amassed a wealth of choice antiquities.
